I would like an inexpensive solution that would allow me to scan barcodes into a spreadsheet that can be uploaded to a desktop. We have a vendor in Korea making serialized products for us, and I want them to send us the in transit serial numbers in an electronic format.

Symbol produce a relatively inexpensive Palm based PDA (less than 300UKP) with a built-in barcode scanner called the SPT-1550. It's pretty easy to program, depending on your skills. AppForge do a nice VB (6 or .net) addin that works well on the device or you can use the Palm SDK.

However a simpler solution may be for them to use an inexpensive keyboard wedge scanner. These can usually be 'programmed' (by scanning special barcodes) so that each barcode would appear in a separate cell of an Excel spreadsheet for example.

All they need to do is open a workbook in Excel and scan each component in turn.
