Good morning.
I just got a new digital camera (Sony DSCP73) and the XP Scanner and Camera wizard won't recognize it. It does recognize my older Canon as soon as I plug it in. And also when I plug my Sony into a newer pc here at work the Scanner and Camera wizard pops up fine. So I know there's nothing wrong with my usb cable or camera cause it works on the brand new pc and I know there's "nothing" wrong with my pc or usb port cause the canon brings up the wizard no problem. So, why won't the wizard come up on this pc with the sony? I've installed all the software that came with the camera but I didn't need to do that on the other pc and the wizard came up fine. I can access the pictures other ways, but I really like the scanner and camera wizard the best. Any idea what the problem is?
Thanks.

Okay, I guess I fixed it. I did a search here and took bcastner's (of course) advice and changed the USB setting on the camera from normal to PTP. I don't know why I had to do this for my particular pc and not the other pc where the wizard came up automatically. What's the difference between these 2 USB settings? And now I have another question. In the wizard when copying the pictures, "Delete pictures from my device after copying" is grayed out. I love that feature. How come I can't use it? Is it the camera or memory stick? Do I have to delete the pictures using the camera only?
Thanks.

In PTP mode the camera acts as a still camera, in the other mode it acts like a web cam.

As for your other question, my guess is that there is either:

. no pictures selected for a copy
. or, there is something besides still pictures stored on the memory card

The book for my camera says that PTP is for mac users, but whatever. Can you explain why I would have to choose PTP for this pc when Normal works on another pc? Do you think maybe the usb ports on my pc are not as "sophisticated" as the ones on the newer pc?

As for the grayed out "delete images", there was only one test picture on the camera and I did have it selected but I still can't select "delete images...".

Thanks.

For the Sony digital cameras I have used, PTP mode was required as the USB setting without exception.

Perhaps the other computer already enabled Web Cam usage and yours did not? Many OEMs ship computers with cheap web cams.

Delete everything on the memory stick with the camera disconnected, take several samples, and test again.

It is very important that you have a My Pictures folder in your profile.

The DSCP73 says to set the usb to normal which was the default. The other computer was brand spanking new and had never had a camera on it. Also, my pc definitely had had a camera on it. The canon worked fine. It's just the sony and also a fuji that wouldn't bring up the wizard. One thing I have noticed when I connect the camera is that I get a pop up saying that the device could work faster if I connected it to a hi speed 2.0 usb port. When I click on it to look for ports it tells me that I do not have any hi speed ports. That's why I'm wondering if the brand new pc has ports better able to handle my camera.

Okay, I deleted everything on the card and took a bunch of pictures. I selected them all and still cannot delete them from the wizard.

Check the manual and see if it is a USB 2.0 only compatible device.

If the camera expects USB 2, then it surely is not going to like normal mode where it is expected to be able to transfer as a web cam high fps rates using USB.

You are so smart. The book says under USB Communication:

Hi-speed USB (USB 2.0 compliant).

So, now I need a new pc to go with my new camera? Sounds good to me. Not my money.

You could add a USB 2.0 compliant adapter. They are not very expensive.

I'm due to get a new one next year anyway. I can deal with this until then. Can you tell me how I can tell exactly what kind of usb ports I've got?

Thanks. That did indeed show that I only have 2 universal and no enhanced. So, I went and looked on the new pc and it says it has 1 enhanced and 4 universal. Do, you know how I can tell which is which on the back of the pc? I must have just got lucky and plugged into the enhanced on the first try.

In your instance all of the ports are USB 2.0 on the new computer.

All 5? Even though only one of them says so?

One entry describes the controller, four entries describe the ports themselves.

If you had a mix of USB 1.x and 2.0 controllers, and therefore ports, there would have been a Standard controller entry as well as an Enhanced controller entry.

There are 4 that say USB UNIVERSAL host controller and one that says USB2 ENHANCED host controller. Which I also find kinda weird cause there are actually 6 usb ports on the back of the pc!

4 that say USB UNIVERSAL host controller" - these are essentially powered external hub entries.

You have a USB 2.0 controller that natively drives two USB ports, and four additional powered hub entries. All are at USB 2.0

Okeydokey. I believe you. Thanks so much.
