After 4 clean installs of XP Pro and much frustrations, I found out why scandisk or chkdsk would not run on restart. The problem is in ZoneAlarm version 5.0. I found out this information from searching and searching for a long time.

It seems some people with version 5 have this problem and some don't. I think it has to do with when you install zonealarm after getting the OS going. I install virus software and zonealarm first thing after getting XP loaded on a clean install. Seems like if ZA is installed first thing like I do, then it grabs hold of the drive from the process order and prevents the scandisk from ocurring on reboot.

Go to the Zone Alarm support page and get the information on how to remove ZA properly and completely first if you are having this problem. Just goin to control panel and removing is not the way it has to be done.

I am tired and it is late and if you need mroe information, just let me know and I will try to help.

This ranks up pretty high in frustrations I have endure over many years with windows.

I too am having this problem, and sure enough I am running ZoneAlarm 5.0. I'll check the ZA website for the info you discussed to try and solve my issue. Thank you TONS for the info WayneMan!
I'm curious if Microsoft is aware of this issue. Check their page:

All great accomplishments were once considered impossible.

I reinstalled the latest version 4 of Zone Alarm and I am still running it. They came out with another version of Zone Alarm and I did install it, however it did the same thing in that it prevents me from being able to scan disk on reboot.

I'm starting to have my doubts about ZA in general. I've been doing some research and there are multiple problems with the latest releases of ZA and their support (even for paying customers) is nearly nothing. Some issue are:

Memory leaks
Huge bootup times
Dramatic losses of bandwidth

You can view many more problems on the ZA forums:

I have the PRO version on ZoneAlarm so I am the "paying" type you refer too. At first, I thought ZA was the best I have ever used. Then they came out with this Version 5 and I had nothing but problems. After finding the users forum relative to ZA and seeing the amount of complaints from so many users I have my doughts about this software firewall.

I at first thought this would be taken care of with a minor update that would remedy all the problems but the update they came out with, as far as I can tell, did not fix anything.

I have installed a hardware firewall (router) and continue to use ZA version 4. I would not pay ZA for the pro version if I had it to do all over again.

Ya live and learn as they say
