I've battled for a few weeks now to get SBS2003 to backup automatically, and I've tried some of the scripts mentioned here earlier as well. I've use both the wizard and the command line options as well.

The problem all the time is the media - it seems that once a tape has been used and the name changed the backup job won't use it again, it wants to use free media all the time.

Therefore what are the implications of ticking the "Return Media to Free Media Pool" of the 4mmDDS Properties box?

If the media is returned to the free media box can it still be used to restore files? ie does SBS lose the catalogs or does it still remember them?

My reason to ask is that I don't want to destroy any backups my client has already done.....

Hope that makes sense?

Hi there,

Yes, this seems to be a problem with 2003 std edition as well, Microsoft have kindly taken away the /UM switch which tells NTBackup to any media in the drive.

I have a script that has got by this problem, but I have experienced problems restoring files back, there might be a question mark over the tape/drive, which doesn't help matters.

I can email you the script and give you a insight on how to use it if you like, you will have to change a part of the code to suit you drive.

Let us know if you would like to try it.

It would be nice to know if it works for you.

That would be great if you can please, the client is currently doing manual backups but is not in the office everyday.....
