Hi All,

I am going on a call tomorrow to install SBC yahoo DSL and wanted to see if anyone in the group is familiar with the process. We have had cable in our area for a while now which is why I am not very familiar with DSL installs. Anyone have any pointers?
Thanks

Stephen

Unless you just want to hand your PC over to SBC/Yahoo don't, for any reason, use the cd they give you. You can just call them and ask for activation code and site info.

The CD loads so much garbage on your pc it's ridiculous. Just my opinion.

Stealer,
Since you have Windows XP (and I'm assuming already a NIC), you don't need anything on SBC's CD. Their browser is a saturated version of IE (basically just a facelift) and does more harm than good. You'll notice that pages load in almost half the time as they do in plain old IE or Netscape.

XP has its own PPPoE support built-in, trashing the need for SBC's Enternet software. Hopefully by now, you've gotten yourself a cheap router by Linksys, D-link, or Netgear to provide added security for your "always-on" connection. In addition to making it easy to share online access, the router also manages the entire connection with the modem and SBC, so nothing at all needs to be set in XP besides basic network settings to obtain a DHCP assigned IP address.

I got the 2wire wireless modem from SBC. I thought I needed to install their software to get the modem up and running. It's true I don't need their browser, but it sure makes it a lot easier for my wife to log on and use email and other yahoo facilities. The 2wire works great except that it is 802.11b rather than g. That means 2 other machines in the house (3 total) can share files, printers, and internet through the 2wire.

I did make sure to sign up all users on yahoo first. Then the SBC and yahoo accounts can be merged. My mail address remains yahoo dot com rather than the cumbersome SBC address and I can log directly into yahoo rather than SBC.

Thanks everybody for all the suggestions. What I ended up doing was to use the CD and install only the minimalwith no browser or most of the other crap.

Thanks

Stephen

I used to work for 2 wire support..the easiest way was not to use the CD..it just added more crap to users computers..
