SBC or Router

I am new to SBC and have a salesperson asking what is the difference between a Avaya SBC and a router? I am not sure how to answer as I have not worked with on or read up on it. Can the router do the same thing as the SBC or is it more flexible for SIP than a router?

Router route packets and operate at layer 3 of the osi model.

SBC are a SIP application device that isolates networks. Sbc devices can terminate tcp/udp sip on 5060 or tls on 5061 and then recreate onto your internal pabx. They can also do sip protocol adaptations betwenn inside and outside.

Basically router routes. Session Border controllers control your border

Every router has a long list of features it can do. Session Border Controllers are just a class of router were that list includes a lot of features relating to securely allowing VoIP traffic between your network and another such as a the big bad internet).

Stuck in a never ending cycle of file copying.

What would you recommend for an SBC on a small IPO install with SIP, I keep seeing 2K+ which on some installs is 25% of the price. I don't want to put this on the public and want a way of locking it down a bit.

New Horizons over the internet which is what make me worried. I am trying to get the sales person to include a SBC.
