When I open my templates in Word97 from NT explorer I have no problems using SAVE AS and saving them as .doc. However when I open up Word97 through programs and then try to save my altered templates as .doc, the SAVE AS isn't available and I consequiently can't save them as .doc, only .dot?

You don't open templates to save them as docs. You hit File-New and it creates a new Document1...
