Saving Pictures in Win98se

Whenever I attempt to save a picture or other graphic by right clicking on it, I am presented with the option to save as a bmp file. This is quite new and I have always saved graphics as jpg extension format. There is no other option on the drop down menu than bmp and therefore something has become corrupted or otherwise changed. Can someone please tell me how to correct this.
