We have had a problem with outlook hanging up when we start it. We have "fixed" it several times but after a few months it goes back to hanging up again. Steps we have taken to fix the hangup:

1. Backup outlook.pst, uninstall Outlook 2000 and reinstall Outlook 2000 and install all Service Packs

2. Delete several folders out of Outlook and compact the database.

3. Upgrade To Outlook 2002 and install all service packs

4. Backup outlook.pst, unistall Outlook 2002, Install fresh copy of Outlook 2002 and apply all service packs.

5. Backup Outlook.pst and migrate to Outlook 2002 on a new workstation.

Everytime we think that we have solved the problem, a few months later it will freeze up again. The pst file is about 1.3 GB in size. Everything that we have done leads me to believe that there must be a problem with the outlook.pst file since we have changed everything else that could be the issue. What we want to do is save all the emails outside of the outlook.pst file then delete the outlook.pst file so that we can create a brand new outlook.pst file.

Now I am faced with having to open each email individually and saving it as a .msg file. Is there anyway to save groups of emails at a time without having to open up each indiviual email and save it?

TIA

-Ray

.pst files will corrupt at about 1 GB according to Microsoft. There is a scanpst.exe on all computers that may resolve that issue. So even if you recreate a new .pst it will corrupt when you import the email in again. Create several .pst files and split the size between them.

If anyone calls and says "I know a little something about computers" just tell them to reformat it.

Since the update to Office (Outlook) XP, the PST has been stable up to 2GB and to ensure that neither the PST or OST file size exceeds the 2Gb limit, a hot fix was released that stops anything being added when it reached 1.82Gb.

If you are having problems still, there are several solutions explained at Slipttick, probably the definitive site for Outlook and Exchange support. See
