Save A Word Document As An Excel Document

I have office 2003 and I'm sure I used to be able tos ave word (.doc ) documents as Excel ( .xls ) documents as a drop down file type option.

I don't have that ability any more. The .xls option is not listed on the 'Save As Type' drop down below the file name when I try to 'Save As'.

Is there an option I need to select somewhere?
