Try this first.

Windows Explorer/View/Status Bar(select it). Then go to Tools/Folder Options/View/Apply
to all folders. It applies it to IE as well.

A few other things to try. I would first of all download and install SP1 (if you haven't) and see if that fixes it.
Sometimes windows XP forgets it's folder view settings.

Here is a possible solution.
Backup these RegKeys.

1:[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\BagMRU]

2:[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam\Bags]

After that you must delete them.
Restart windows to take effect.

supplied the above fix.

If this is a very recent happening perhaps using System Restore might fix it.

Have you run the System File checking program by typing Sfc /Scannow in the Run Box?
Requires your XP CD.

And while your CD is in the drive you can try this.
The ability to Repair Internet Explorer does not exist in the version that ships with Windows XP. This feature only becomes available after you upgrade to a newer version. This is normal and has been this way since Windows 98 and IE4. However, you can reinstall IE in Windows XP by clicking Start, Run and entering the following command:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 c:\windows\inf\ie.inf

If that doesn't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.

Is this what you call Microsoft products?

Consume a lot of time and effort for only one tiny mistake?

I love Windows XP very much, because of its challenges to every programmer like me :(
