I am currently upgrading my system's motherboard. I am fairly new to the whole process. I understand the basic differences between SATA, IDE, and EIDE but will a motherboard that supports SATA also support IDE and EIDE? The reason that I am asking is becuase I would like to only upgrade the motherboard and keep the hard drive which is EIDE, and found a few motherboards I really liked but they are SATA. Any info would be appreciated.

The boards should tell you what they support - one's I've looked at still have the 2 IDE connectors as well as SATA.

Julian,

This may not be completely on point for your question, but in the XP Forum that has been some very valuable SATA discussions recently. Of special merit is SYAR2003's new FAQ: faq779-4641

I havn't seen a mainstream desktop motherboard out YET that hasn't got normal, standard, everyday IDE connections on it.
Some do have SATA AS WELL! but all have the two traditional IDE connections also.
There may come a time that manufactures stop producing motherboards with standard IDE connections, but I have a feeling it will be sometime yet before that happens.

Hello

I agree with paparazi all motherboards still come with the regular 2 IDE controllers (while the SERIAL ATA is OPTIONAL as well as SCSI and RAID

Thanks,

After further inspection of the motherboards I was looking at I did notice that normal IDE connections were available on most. I was in a bit of a hurry so I wasn't looking as close as I should have been.
