Ok, given the long day, I may be missing something obvious here, but a co-worker just showed me a table where a column, defined as smallint had a row with a value that was text, specifically a sentence.

Is there any way whatsoever this would be possible? I thought that even if the field was changed to varchar, that when being changed back to int, it would error out converting the text.

Or is it just really time to go home today?

I don't see how that could be possible! What happens when you try to select the record?

Unless the data within the table has become corrupt this shouldn't be possible.

I'd consider running DBCC CHECKTABLE on that table.
