Hello Everyone,

Hopefully someone can clear these questions for me.

We currently have the following:

- domain1 (hosted with ISP1)
- domain2 (hosted with ISP2)
- one internal Email server (Exchange), accepting emails for both domains.

I've noticed that we have the same MX Record and A record at both ISP’s, pointing to the same host and same IP address respectively, but with different priority number. See below:

Host Priority IP Address
mailhost.domain1.com 5 99.99.99.99 (ISP1 MX Record)
mailhost.domain1.com 1 99.99.99.99 (ISP2 MX Record)

I would like to know:

1) If this can cause a DNS issue? (I would think slow resolution because of the different priorities)
2) Is it necessary to have multiple MX Record pointing to same host with different ISP's? (if not I’ll go ahead and delete one)

Any suggestions are truly welcome.

Thanks,

Rocket

Rocket, everything is set up as it should be. One ISP just used a different priority number for its MX record, but since they are different ISP's and you only have one MX record per domain, any client trying to deliver mail to you will only deal with one of the MX records. There is functionally no difference between having a 1 or a 5 in the priority.

And don't delete one of the records. Each DOMAIN needs to have an MX record for proper mail routing. You can't have mail routed for both domains without each domain having an MX record.

Nothing you've described should create any sort of delay in mail delivery.

Hi Shack,

Sorry for the late reply, it's been kind of busy days.

But I appreciate your help on clearing that out.

As always tek-tips is the best!

Thanks again,

Rocket
