Samba question 2

Running RH 6.1 with samba 2.0.7, I know I know, I need to upgrade.

But...running a share and users can read the documents located within the share but when they save the file the owner and group changes to the them instead of the group specified within smb.conf.

I tried adding "force user and force group" within the smb.conf file and restarting smbd and nmbd still no luck.

Any ideas on how I can fix this problem (outside of upgrading) would be appreciated!

whats the section of your smb.conf look like that controls the particular share, and does any global entry override what the share level control tries to set ?

Good question, below is global and share portion of the smb.conf file. I just added the bottom 4 lines of the share but have not restarted smb since making the adjustment.

you need to restart smb to get the changes to take effect, you can run testparm to see what smb makes of your config.

testparm runs fine, no errors. Restarted smb - still no dice. So, I adjusted these lines and restarted smb:

force create mode = 0777
force directory mode = 0777

which obviously temporarily fixes the problem since everyone has rwx. It makes me think there's something going on with user accounts and the group 'users'. I have double-checked the group and it does in-fact have all the appropriate users in the group. I even tried setting a different group and added accounts to it and ran into the same problem.

Stuck....

to keep the users with their own groups create mode should be 0765 iirc.

If it still doesn't work change the follwing line

force group = @users

to

force group = users

and restart.
