I have just setup samba to work on my home network. I can connect to the linux machine from windows and vice versa.

I have a user that is on both on the linux and windows machine the problem is that when i log in as root i can access the windows shares without being prompted for a password but when i log into unix as the same user that is on the windows machine i keep getting prompted to enter a username and password everytime. I cant understand why i dont get prompted for a password when logged in as root.

I am using redhat 9 and i have the latest samba release. The problem i describe occurs when using the konqueror browser, if i use the nautilus i get prompted for a password no matter who i am logged in as.

I have added the windows user/password into the samba user database using the smbpasswd utility. I have the permissions on the windows shares set to 'Everyone' at the moment so i would have thought i would be able to access the windows shares logged in as anyone.

If someone could advise me why this is happening it would be much appreciated.

Have you tried forcing the user ROOT?
Also try turning on guest access if its off and forcing the guest user to ROOT.
You could also try mapping the username.

I did try mapping the usernames but i get the same result.

How do 'force the user ROOT'?

I tried forcing the root user that failed to work. I will explain the problem again

i have a windows box which has the user fred on it with the password '123456', 'fred' also has an account on the linux box with the same unix password. fred has been added to the samba user database and using the same password.

The problem is that when logged in as root i can browse the windows shares without any problem, but when i try the same again when logged in as 'fred' i have to enter a user of 'fred' and password of '123456'

I have specified all my network hosts in the relevant host files, i have tried mapping the usernames but i still have the same problem.

I would assume that logging in as fred on the linux machine should allow him to be able to browse the windows network without having to enter 'fred' and '123456' again or is this not the case?
