I have setup many winxp machines to connect to my samba network etc. In XP I can just type "net use f: \\server\share" and it uses the username and password I logged into windows with to map my drives. And it remembers them once mapped.

I also have a few Win98 machines still in use on my network and even though I log into windows using my samba username and password I still have to put the password in my net use command in order for it to work. (ex: net use \\server\share mypassword"). It then uses the windows username and the password entered to map the drive. BUT, then it doesn't remember it either. I also tried mapping from Net Neighborhood and it doesn't give me the option to "Reconnect at startup". How can I get Win98 to remember drives and use both the username and password I type into the "Microsoft Networking" dialog at startup?

A little odd. Have you created login scripts?

Matt J.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

On our Win98 PC's we do it this way: Left-click on the network neighborhood icon; right-click on "map network drive"; Enter the server and share name (i.e.: \\server\share); be sure to check the box "connect at next logon" then click on OK. This will use your PC's identification name and signon password for security. Best result is that the drive will be always connected. Even after a reboot.

Good luck.

Bob, that is exactly how I am doing it. Except id doesn't use the login information to map the drive. I created a share that had world read & write. If I connect to this share I can create a file like normal. But, if I look at it from the Linux machine, the file was created by user "nobody" instead of the user I'm logged in as. It only does this with my 98 machines. My XP machines work fine creating files with correct username.

Are the passwords encrypted ?

Hope This Helps, PH.
