Cannot seem to find out how to keep my REMOVE HARDWARE icon in the system tray. It sometimes appears after a reboot, but haven't seen it for several days. I need it to eject my CD drive to swap with floppy drive on occasion, and also flash drive on USB port removal. I'm missing something simple here I think.

Users cannot access "Safely Remove Hardware"
thread779-1131505

See if there are any clues amongst this lot.

292750 - HOW TO: View the Storage Devices That Are Displayed As "USB SCSI Storage Device"

Right-click your storage device drive icon/ Properties/ Hardware/ ( Select your device from list)/ Properties/ Policies

Of the two options for Write Caching and Safe Removal, what have you got checked there?

You do not receive the "Safe to remove hardware" message when you click the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in Windows XP

If no luck have a go using System Restore to get your icon back.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

Thanks linney,
That was some good info.
Tried your suggestions but never got the icon back.
It has finally returned today.
It seems to float back and forth between CURRENT items and PAST items in the notification area. If I select (hide inactive icons) then select customize, I can find it in the past items. Just need to figure out how to keep it current.
Think I am still missing something very simple here.
A star to you for your efforts.

How is it if you logon using a different username?
