Windows 2000 server. BU 9.1. Is it safe to password backup tapes? I've read some discussions, limited, and see some disadvantages. Let's say you will not forget your password, that the password will always be safe. Any other concerns, in the sense that if you lose your hard drive and have to restore from tape, will the passwording of the tape in any way prevent the restore of the tape to the hd?
Thank you, I am a new member and am using Backup Exec as my backup software and have some basic questions.

If you password protect the tape you will need to inventory/catalog the tape for a restore. Cataloging the tape populates your restore selection and what you can restore from the tape. When you catalog the tape it will prompt for the password. If you use the tape in NTBACKUP or in other backup programs you will get the same results. So if you loose the password then you need to send the tape off to a data recovery company.
