Currently, our S8720s are named 'server1', 'server2' and 'server' for the active server name.

I want to change these names. When changing server names, is it service affecting? Is there any naming guidelines, i.e. number of characters, hyphens allowed?

Any guidance is appreciated.

Jim

Log into the standby server and go into the server config section. select configure individual and rename the server whatever you want. It will tell you when you try to submit the name if there is an invalid entry.

I say do the standby first because you'll be able to do this without bringing down the active server to simply test a new nameing scheme.

I have used the following names on my servers:

itchy/scratchy
starsky/hutch
wilbur/orville
alpha/omega
harold/kumar

Those were my previous employer. My current situation dictates a naming standar which includes a series of predefined digits to define the server role, location, name, and such.

As long as you only configure individual services it is not service affecting.

I usually include as much as the customer name + A or B eg tektips_A
tektips_B

it helps during fault finding to be able to quickly identify which server you're on
