there is a large price difference between the two setups. An S8500 is a single server configuration while an S87XX is a pair of servers to provide more redundancy. If you have an S8500 and want to upgrade then you must replace the entire setup with the new servers.
you mean $10k is huge difference? other than that, there's no difference between s8500 and s8700 in standard-duplex configuration. i mean, s8500 (the server hardware itself) price is $5k, s8700 is $15k. or $20k, whatever. compared to the cost of other hardware and software, it's cheap...
Cheap in one sense, since hey what's $10K in a $100K project right?
But if you look at the actual figures...the redundancy offered by the S87xx solutions cost 3X of a simplex, S8500 solution. And at the end of the day, both run comunication manager and will provide dial tone to your phones...
That said, I would STILL go with the S87xx solution over the S8500 if I had my choice.
Aside from the reliability & redundancy of the two server solution, having both servers also allows you to perform more work outside of your "production" environment. If you need to install a service pack, do it on the backup server first....if something goes wrong, no harm no foul.
yeah, the other main idea behind duplicated system besides redundancy is the ability to perform maintenance tasks without downtime. and that's the ticket for many customers, especially large ones.
