I can select the ARIAL CYRILLIC fonts from within the fonts
You don't need to do this if your Windows configured to display Russian text by default. Usually this do not help, specially with UNICODE characters, because ARIAL CYRILLIC font is quite old, as far as I know. It was made or windows versions that have problems with codepages, now it is solved on more genera way, so this fond no longer needed (many people, however, still use it because its name, but it is mistake).
Are your other applications in Windows allow to type Cyryllic text, except Word? I meant, for example, Notepad, file names in russian etc.? In addition, some earlier installations of Windows 2000 have problems with cyryllic fonts when installed from scratch. To install cyryllic fonts properly, you need to reinstall Windows 2000 again to make them effect. I understand, this sound stupid, but when you install Windows 2000 with cyryllic settings from start, it don't works.
Finally, got ot control panel and check that you have following. "Your system is configured to write documents in multiple languages" in the General tab, and 'Cyryllic' is checked below it. Your locale is Russian. You are able to type and see cyryllic text when you try to rename file to cyryllic chars name and current font for display was not changed from default.
