I run a small W2k network with Norton AV 2002 on each PC for virus protection. The "live update" feature does not work unless users are logged on as local admin and so to keep the virus defs up to date I have been:

1) downloading them to server
2) sending each user a link to the virus def update file via email

Their AV is then up to date. However this has suddenly stopped working and the defs update will only install when the user is logged on as local admin.

Is there a way to download the file to the server and then allow each user to easily run it with admin rights??

Yes, you can go to setting/control panel/ user and password. In there, add the user you want and give that user administrator rights.

We use roaming profiles and so I cant really go to every PC and add every user....

Is there a way that every time they run the update, it runs as a different user (eg local administrator)?

Many thanks

Hold the SHIFT key while right clicking on the program. This will add the "Run as.." command to the list> The click on the Run as and run the program as an administrator.

Will this work for you? James Collins

Why don't you use a logon script to do the update?

You could either use Group Policy and create a MSI around the upgrade or
use scheduled taks, schedule a task for after login and give it the administrator credientials to use.

Many thanks for your help - i tried the "Run as" approach with my users this morning but they found this "too complicated"!?

If i included it at the end of the logon script, would it be run under admin rights?

If you can figure how to setup local admin without going to each computer, I would like to know!!!

I have been thinking that I could write a script file that automatically adds the end user as an administrator locally. It seem to complicate. Therefore, I have to go to each computer locally and add each user. What a pain.
