Rundll32 error setting up Exchange access on a 98 laptop

Trying to set up the exchange account on a 98 laptop I recieve crashes of "Rundll32 has caused an invalid page fault in Kernell32.dll" when doing a "Check Name" in Outlook 2002. It cannot access the mailbox and it causes Ill Op's all over the place. Outlook with not even run with exchange installed.

I have tried a lot, rebuilt the account on the server, installing outlook 2000, patches, service packs...etc. Would it help to simply upgrade to 2000?
