Hi guys,

I have a Windows 2000 Pro SP4 PC here that a user runs at home for work, however, after about a minute after the PC has booted the the following error message appears:

"Run-time error '424' Object required"

The error message has no assignment to any software installed (i.e. the error message label is blank), i'm aware there are a few problems related to this error message but i've done a viruscan and IE6 and latest updates are already installed. Also tried regsvr32.exe comdlg32.ocx to no avail.

Any ideas? If you require more info please let me know.

Thanks

Can you download a copy of hijackthis? Do a search in google for it. Get her to run it and keep the log file to post here.
Something is running which probably shouldnt.hopefully hijack this will highlight it.
Couple extra questions:
When did she start getting the messages? What was the last piece of software to be installed?

From what the user tells me the last piece of software they uninstalled was GAINWARD ad software (I think it was part of the Kazza uninstall he did). This was done through Add/Remove.

Thanks

Hi,
The logs look okay although there are a lot of extra search addins for explorer referenced, part of the Kaxaa install I would assume.
However I think that the error is related to this uninstall.
Basically Kazzaa and its components are notoriously hard to uninstall totally.
I assume that some part of it has been left behind, the part left behind looks for this file afterstartup but cant fins it as it has been removed.
I would advise downloading another uninstaller package. U can get some free good ones. I think one is called easy uninstaller. This will remove even the most stubborn programes.
Also advisable would be to download an app called easycleaner and get it to scan the registry for any broken reg links and to delete them.
Finally download spyboot and run it. Spybot searches for spyware and u can removed it when it finds it(I say this because there are some dodgy looking search addins in ur hijack report and it may be beneficial to check for spyware)
I hope that some of this helps or if not that it points u along the right track, please let me know how you get on,
JP

I clicked all of the boxes and restarted, seems to of done the trick. I had a look for the other software and downloaded it, i'm sure it will have a use one day!

Many thanks,

Hammertime
