I recently applied SP2 and followed by Windows update fixes. This was followed by installation of a new AV program (Kaspersky).

There are various (legitimate) programs set to run at startup including a mail program (Mercury) and ATI utilities for changing the screen etc.

What I would like is for the AV to load first. As it is, Windows puts up a message saying I may be at risk because the AV is not running and 0.5 sec later I see the AV starting to download the latest signatures.

So my question is - can I control the startup order of programs?

Not really...
Assume you have Software1 and Software2, and that you could somehow determine the OS to run Software1 and then Software2. Now let's suppose Software1 takes 2 seconds to load while Software2 takes only 1/10 seconds.
The result? Given the above conditions, Software1 will start first but will be operational later than Software2.
This is why the startup order does not really matter...

The problem you are experiencing is probebly due to the fact the the new security center that was introduced in Windows XP SP2 does not recognise your anti virus application. See if there are any Program Updates for your Anti-V product. Many of them needed specific updates to solve this problem.

Thanks for your replies.

XP SP2 does recognise Kaspersky. It will specifically say - you are not protected because Kaspersky is not running. Then a fraction later Kaspersky springs into life.

I take the point about different loading times. However, I would still prefer Kaspersky to be the first to start loading.

It might be the Kasperksy is being launched late in the startup process.

This you can influnce without any third-party utilities.

XP procesess the startup as follows:

BootExecute
HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\BootExecute
Services
User enters a password and logon to the system
UserInit
HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\UserInit
Shell

Often moving an item from its location at specific user startup location to the "All Users" location helps.

Of the two utilities I use to change startup despositon, this is the easiest to find: AutoRuns by sysinternals:
The "trick" is to right click, Properties for the item of interest, and you can the change its startup despostion.

That's exactly the sort of information I was looking for. As we are talking about my home PC I will try this evening when I get home and report progress.
