Hi,
This is an XP Home question but this seems to be the closed forum to it here.
I have a friend who has set up limited accounts on his PC for his kids. However his kids place games which require the CD to be in the drive. Sadly XP home will not recognise the CD under a limited account.
I know you can click on the CD and RUN AS the administrator but this is not useful.
I have heard that this is a known issue with XP home however I was wondering if anyone knew a way around it.
Thanks is advance

Are they trying to install software from the CD? A limited user should have read access to the CD even in XP Home. Can you clarify what the problem is?

Sorry,
the software has been installed but the CD needs to be in the drive for the software to run.

Have you tried this SafeDisc patch from Microsoft?

Can you use this to increase their rights?

CDRom : Limited users can not burn CDs in Windows XP Home
if you have setup limited users and want them to be able to burn CDs, set value HLM\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\AllocateDASD = 2.

307091 - Certain Programs Do Not Work Correctly If You Log On Using a Limited User Account

Is there anything configurable in this?

Are you certain that it is the CD that is the problem? It could be that the software is trying to update a file that is in the installed software's directory (perhaps under Program Files) but the limited user does not have rights to modify this file. The file could even be as simple as a lock file.

Limited users can read but not modify files in the Program Files directory tree. I has this issue with some software under Windows 2000. I solved it by giving limited users modify rights to the software dir within "Program Files". The problem you would then need to overcome is that XP Home does not by default allow you access to the same security settings that XP Pro does. I believe there are other places here that can help with getting around the security settings.

Let me know if I have not been clear enough in explaining this or if this has been helpful.

The issues of limited rights to the CD Rom, access restrictions to the Program Files folder, registry restrictions, and other issues of using game CDs were covered in my earlier link.
