Run as Root

Any suggestions on how to get root access to run the install and upgrade scripts without running as root?

Hi,
As far as I know, root is root - I have seen no systems that have any other method.

( Why not run as root - unless, of course, you do not have access to the root account for some reason)

Simple... Auditors do not allow root access to Application users including DBA's....

Perhaps ask the system admin to allow you access to certain commands (root.sh perhaps?) via sudo?

I want to be good, is that not enough?

Problem is with the install/upgrade scripts supplied by oracle... Have to go line by line through each and add the sudo...

Couldn't your sys admin just run the script(s) - that's what he/she is there for surely?

I guess we are getting away from the original question.. and you have no mercy on your co-workers... We do upgrades during Maint windows, which are the first Sunday of each Month and we start at 2AM... Everytime we do an upgrade to Oracle, we would require a DBA and SysAdmin in for each Oracle server... They are pulled away from there maint... Does not make any sense to me... But you must work in a large shop where this is not a problem... Anyway, it sounds like you can not get there from here...

'co-workers' - exactly the point. Why should you shoulder responsibilities that aren't officially yours?

I really think you are exaggerating the difficulties of using the sudo command. Typically the only thing in an installation or upgrade that requires root privileges is running the root.sh script. It's easy enough to set up the /etc/sudoers file in advance to give you permission to run this yourself.

At least you should give it a try before throwing in the towel and saying it won't work. That's what the sudo command is for.

I'd pass the issue on to your sysadmins/DBAs with words to this effect:

"Either you come in at 2am on Sunday to do your bit, or you figure out an acceptable way for me to do it without you. Your choice."

At the end of the day, it's their call.
