I have a WinXPsp2 machine that had had no problems until the other day. Nothing new was installed. I went home for the night leaving a CD to burn with Easy CD creator, which I have done before. I came in the next day and there was a 'Low Virtual Memory...adjusting' message, I logged on and the system has been crawling ever since. Windows Taskbar will not pull up, neither will my email (outlook). I rebooted into safe mode and ran a virus scan with SAV corporate edition. Virus defs are from 3/23. I tried to run Microsoft's Beta spyware program, but keep getting an error. I ran a downloaded trial version and ran it. All that was found was some tracking cookies which I deleted. Today I noticed that the RPC service wasn't started and subsequently alot of other services were not started. When I try to manually start it it gives me an Access Denied message. I have logged on as a domain administrator which should have full rights to this computer. At least they did Monday when I went home.

One of the things I can't do is open up any event viewer entry, or service properties, or properties of the local Admins group. I also can't navigate from the network from any other machine, which I used to be able to do. The original entry in my system log was a DCOM error, but again it wouldn't let me look at the details of the error.

Any ideas?

I would check hard drive space.

If you are low on hard drive space it can't adjust to a high enough # for virtual memory.

If that doesn't fix it, then set your virtual memory to a hard # and set it around 756MB (or 1024MB if needed).

This should correct the low virtual memory problem and allow the RPC service to start. Should also allow the rest of the apps to start normally.

There are 26G of free space. The virtual memory was at 764. I upped it to 1024 without any change in the services being able to start. I did notice that when I reset the paging file size, in the top window under the column for paging file size, it says 1024-2048. However, in the bottom section for Total paging file size for all drives the currently allocated amount is still 764Mb. Should those numbers have changed when I reset the file size?

As well as discussing the paging file see what this article says about permissions for System and Everyone.

Error Message: Your System Has No Paging File, or the Paging File Is Too Small

This is an example of the Access Denied message as it applies to another Service, maybe you can adapt the suggested workaround?

well, nothing I do seems to help. All virus and spyware come back clean, but the problems persist. I'm about ready to format and reinstall.
