I know that this connection method is meant as an alternative to VPN connection but is it also intended to be used on your internal network to connecto to Exchange? Does it have lower bandwidth requirements than normal RPC?

I want to consolidate 4 exchange servers into one site so anything that reduces traffic sent over the WAN will be a bonus.

It's meant to replace VPN for connections across the public internet, not for in-house connections. If you have your own private WAN, you should just be using standard MAPI (RPC). RPC-over-HTTP is mainly for security purposes. Straight RPC is faster.
