I am currently practicing to migrate from exchange 5.5 to 2003. Exchange 2003 will be installed in a different organization from the exchange 5.5. All users will not be migrated simultaneously.

My currnet predicament is how to ensure that email continues to flow between the migrated users and those still in the exchange 5.5 organization.

I configured an x.400 connector between both organization and was able to get the email to flow. However, the return address on each email is in X.400 format instead of smtp. Because of this, I am unable to reply to any of the message.

How may this be solved?

Avoid migration if at all possible.
Do a fresh 2003 install and move over dat using ExMerge or any other too to do this task.

Hi Vic88,

I did a similar thing back in january.

Essentially I had my new exchange server set up, and configured to accept e-mail from all my e-mail domains.

Then I set my new exchange server to deliver all e-mail, with unknown (not found/existant) recipients to the IP address of the 5.5 server.

Then I changed the NAT rule in the f/w to NAT all port 25 to the IP address of the new server, so it handled all incoming mail.

Once I was satisfied that mail was flowing: - you may need to tweak a few settings such as: Anti-Spam, Anti-Virus, DNS servers - ensuring that f/w allows new mail server dns lookups etc.
- I then used exmerge to bring the accounts across.

I actually did the accounts enmass one friday evening, but i see no reason why you could not do them one at a time, just inform the user that their mailbox is being migrated so they should jump out of e-mail for a bit shile you do this.
- Then you will obviously need to update/recreate their outlook/exchange profile.

This is a pretty simplistic overview - pls let me know if you need any further detail and I will see what I can dredge up from the memory banks :D

NB: We have a subtenant utilising our old 5.5 server and mail is still flowing to it to this day. Not desirable but about to be fixed: See thread:

Cheers and Goodluck!
