Router Usage

I have been informed by my internet supplier that my 2 meg line is running at 95 % usage and I think this is wrong.
I am using a 2620 cisco router .

Does anybody know a way of checking the router to confirm this or anyway of showing what the router is doing.

If you want a real time view of what it is doing, you will need to login to the router and issue the command 'show interface xxxx' where xxxx is the 2mb interface. If you're not sure which interface is the 2mb interface, just do 'show interface' and it will show ALL your interfaces. Hopefully it will be clear which one is the 2mb internet connection.

If you want a historical view of what the router is doing, you will probably need to install a product like MRTG which can provide an ongoing statisitcal overview of the Internet capacity used by the router for any time interval.

You may also find that your Internet provider could well be monitoring using something like MRTG already. Might be worth asking them to forward a bandwidth utilisation report to you for, say, the last month.

Also check to see if your bandwidth statement on your interface is set to 2000 so it will give you an accurate reading . As previously said do a "show interface " and it will numbers as as ratio to 255 just divide the first number by 255 to get an approximate utilization on the line . You can also look at the 5 minute input and output rates to get probably a better idea using the show int command.

I've used a product called PTRG, it's similiar to MTRG but only monitors one interface at a time. It's a quick easy install and good for trouble shooting.
