I guess you have used tftp (as in copy tftp running-config) to load your config into the router. Just reverse the process, i.e copy run tftp.
Also if you copy & paste in to the router, do a show run and c&p the output into a notepad text file, again the reverse of loading it.

You can back up the config by using SNMP or TFTP. Solarwinds has a tool to do this for manual back ups.. Kiwi CAT Tools can automate this function if you have several routers. Expensive tools like CastleRock SNMPc or CiscoWorks or HP OpenView can use SNMP to get the same thing.
Of course the cheapest way is use the free Teraterm telnet application and turn on logging.. then just telnet to the router, show the config and then save the log. No mess no fuss.. works very well when you need to send the *show tech* to Cisco TAC and you find out that the results are over 1,000 lines
