I have a problem with unauthorizing a DHCP server that seems to be running on a Laptop. The only problem is that there is no DHCP server software on that laptop. Any ideas? When i try to Unauthorize it, mmc.exe crashes...

Does it show the DHCP Server Service running in the Services Applet? If so stop then disable the service.

If the service won't stop, set it to disabled and then reboot.

If the DHCP Server Service isn't running you might have some malware on your system. Update AV and install AdAware ( and scan for virus' and malware.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Mark

Hi, just a thought, check to see if the laptop is running internet connectin sharing, cos that will cause it to act as a dhcp server.

well, i tried killing it on a 2k3 server we just set up and it told me that the object doesn't exist. The name of the server and the name of the laptop are completely different. I thought you couldn't do ICS unless you have more than one nic or a nic and a modem...

ICS is disabled if you are in a domain which you are so that should not be an issue, though it was a good thought.

I hope you find this post helpful. Please let me know if it was.

Thanks for the help. I think its just a fluke and will correct itself when we upgrade to 2k3 sometime this year. I just find it odd that it got approved as a dhcp server. I think the laptop just happened to get that IP address and it was a coincedence. Thanks for all the help
