I have setup several backups to run daily, each with a monthly retention backing up incremental data. Are these tapes written over each time backups run? or will these tapes be written over, or appended to, only after the expiration date?

Your data stays on the tapes until the images expire and other images can be appended to the tape. Use the images on media report for a specific tape id to see what is already there.

Each day the tape will be written to untill it is full of data at which point a new tape is allocated and writting continues. The tape will be avalible for reuse when all the backups (images) on it have expired. Tapes are selected as the next to be written to based on lest written to tape first.
