I hope that someone out there can help me as they manufacturer will not. I hope it's ok that a rookie uses this forum for help. My problem...I have an IBM Aptiva with Windows 98. Today, I installed MacAfee Virus and no problem and then tried to install IBM Cyber Scroll Mouse. When I put the disk in I got an error and all shut down. When I turn it on I get the Windows 98 page and that's all. When I hit escape I get a dos page that reads that virus scan ok and then it says this:
scanning C: (ibmvol)
Scanning C:\*.*
Pass 1
Pass 2
ETc. through Pass 9
c:/

I can not do anything at this point. I've rebooted, turned off and my computer is locked up. Can anyone give me some advice. I sure hope so.......djanna

You may be able to restore windows to the previous configuration by restarting your computer in MS DOS mode then using "scanreg /restore" without the quotes. Pick the last started date shown in the menu. Restart computer.

Remove by uninstalling your virus protection and mouse driver. Removed mouse drive by going to start, run, type "msconfig" without quotes, then click plus sign, highlight mouse driver, click remove and restart computer.

This hopefully will take you back to your previous configuration. This won't solve the specific issue but will get you back to square one.

Thanks for the help. I think you are right, but when I restart my computer, the IBM screen comes up, then the Windows 98....When I hit esc, a dos screen comes up but I am unable to type anything or highlight anything etc...just locked up!

Have you tried booting into Safe Mode? After the IBM logo screen disappears press F8 and select Safe Mode. Then uninstall McAfee and restart. If you can't uninstall from Safe Mode (which you should be able to) then go to the Run line and type msconfig and select the start up Tab. Remove all associations with your Virus software on start up and reboot. -Brad

If F8 does not work restart the computer and hold down the ctrl key and you should be prompted as to which mode to start in.
