I have an MSI board with 512MB RAM and an Athlon XP 2100. The board has been alternating between normal startup and ROM BIOS checksum error, is this fixable or just a sign of mobo death?
First, though, you should check the battery and see it its at 3.0 volts. If its under 2.9 then it should be replaced. You can go to a computer or other store and pay $5 or you can get the very same battery at the $1 for $1.
Uusually the number is 2032 but check yours.
Also, dont mean to disagree with Ben, as hes a nice guy, but that error message can come not only from a low battery but ive had that error from adding new ram or re-setting the bios. After i went in and re-set the bios to proper settings, save and exit and then the error message went away and the battery was ok all the time.
Sorry Ben, dont mean to be at odds with you.
@Garebo - the more info, the better the suggestions... I can only learn more by others sharing their experiences and knowledge... so don't worry, it's cool...

Thanks, Ben, sorry about that, just you never know how it will be taken, and i dont ever want to hurt anyones feelings or appear to be a richardhead.
In the end, you certainly are right. I have learned so much here from people like you.
