Role of W2K Server DNS vs Internet DNS

I thought I understood this, but I need some clarification...

I have a pair or domain servers with W2K Server and active directory. They each are running W2K DNS. (IP 10.0.0.2 & .3)

I also have a pair of name servers running in the DMZ set up with the mydomoain.com records. (IP xxx.xxx.xxx.2 & .3)I am comfortable that these are working fine - web & mail resolves to my servers without a problem.

When the consultant configured the W2K-AD servers, they had all of the host pc's point to the 10.0.0.2&3 servers for DNS and had the W2K-AD servers pointing to both each other and themselves for DNS (10.0.0.2 to 10.0.0.2 & 3 / 10.0.0.3 to 10.0.0.3 & 2).

I could never figure out why or how this worked - I had always thought that the W2K-AD DNS was supposed to resolve local host to other local hosts only.
I had thought each host and W2K server should have both a local and internet dns server listed.

I guess my question is: Is the function of the W2K-AD DNS similar to an internet Nams Server, just that one resolves on a local level and the other public?

Thanks-

DNS on a W2K server is no different (in function) to any other DNS server that might be on the Internet.

It is only a matter of how you intend to use it and how you configure it.
