Roaming user profiles

I am trying to understand the process of what happens when a user logs on for the very first time with a user profile configured as roaming. I know that during the configuring customization and setup of an RUP you copy the local and upload to the server from there i assume that the server compares and copies files that are different and new to the local copy on the windows 2000 client.

Am i correct?

log on as normal. If they have their profile specified as on a network share, when they log off it will become a roaming one.
