We have 20 XP pro laptops connecting to a Win2K server through an Avaya 11Mbit wireless access point. Users are set up to use roaming profiles. The problem is that logging into the domain and retrieving the profile takes at least 10 mins. the profile is only basic & contains no email or internet info as they use a caching proxy server & web mail.
The profiles are only about a 1 Mb - over 11Mbit connection.
Is there any way to speed up the log on process?

By leaving the profile boxes in AD unfilled do the users automatically get a local profile created on the fly? and does this take long?

NB There are about 200 users sharing these laptops (school).

Thanks in anticipation

you should upgrade to higher speeds in your wireless systems, or use more acess points, to divide the load. A+, MCP, CCNA

Yes
and does this take long?
No, only a few seconds

You can also setup the laptops to be an a single OU and using group policys (Computer Config - Admin Templates - System - Logon) You can control the use of user profiles and policies). That way those machines would stop waiting for profiles after X minutes or prompt to ask for them.

Excellent CharlieJax.
All the users are in the same OU.
So I can still have the user set up as a limited user but using a local profile? if I use policies

Will XP create a new profile for every new user that logs onto a machine? Or can it be forced to use a profile that is already present?

many thanks

It can be forced to use an existing profile through the use of Mandatory Profiles.

And can that profile be stored on the local machine?

Can I use something like "%localdrive%\profilefolder\" when configuring Mandatory Profiles?

thanks for your help
