We have a Windows 2003 Server with Roaming Profile setup. When user open large excel files (~4MB), it takes a long time. There are Windows 98/2000/XP clients, and they are all doing the same thing. Can someone help me?
It usually takes about 1 min to 2 min to open an excel file (4MB). No matter the file is on the local drive or network drive. However, if I don't use roaming profile but local profile, everything runs fast. We have HP Laserjet 1300 driver.
I know it sounds weird. We had the same problem with word and excel files being extremely slow and when we started using the PS driver it seemed to make it better. Something with how the PCL6 driver was loaded with word and excel. We were using roaming profiles at the time as you are. We have since switched to just loacl profiles and using PCL drivers again and all is kosher. Something about the romaing profile possibly.
I'm not sure if this will fix your problem, but if you're using AD and have not already done so, implement Folder Redirection for My Documents, Desktop, and Application Data and then remove those folders from the Roaming Profile (all done via GP) - you should see some considerable improvement in file access times, ast least for network files (probably local files as well, given the level of integration that Windows systems have).
