I can right-click on C: from the Windows Explorer and get to the properties box, etc. But if I try it from the My Computer window (or the File menu in My Computer) it totally locks the system. Ctrl/Alt/Del does nothing, so turning the power off is the only way out.

Any ideas what I can do to fix this? Or just use the Explorer all the time and not the My Computer window?

Check for updates at microsoft.com, if you already have or there isn't anything useful, consider repairing windows with the XP cd.

Reading this and your other post I wonder if it is not time to think about a reformat and clean install. In any case it would be a good idea to start backing up your most valuable data.

That said, you could try using System Restore (if you have any restore points left) to get back to before the problem.

Some other general things to try.

Try Safe Mode (Do you have this problem in Safe Mode?).

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right click your Drive icon (in explorer)/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If they don't work you could try repairing windows itself by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
