When logged in as a regular user (through nis and nfs) at a workstation and trying to change password with yppasswd, the following error message occurs:

yppasswd: yppasswdd not running on NIS master host

If I go to the nis server and use this command:

chkconfig --list yppasswdd

it indicates the service is on at levels 2-5.

I have tried starting and stopping every service I can think of:

ypbind
ypserv
yppasswdd
nfs
network

If I use the formerly reliable passwd command, it seems to work until that last step in which it spits out the error message:

passwd: Failed preliminary check by password service

If you have come across this and have some suggestions, I would very much appreciate what you have to say. Thank you.
