My machine has suddenly started using the c:\windows folder for temporary files instead of c:\windows\temp. How can I revert the temp folder to the default? I have tried setting the system TEMP system variable in AUTOEXEC.BAT but it made no difference. The OS is windows 98se.

What command line did you use? What else is in the Autoexec.bat and Config.sys? ~cdogg

So if you've put
SET TEMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

try adding
SET TMP=C:\WINDOWS\TEMP

I noticed there are two temp variables so its worth adding both.
For a list of the variables, go to START -> RUN -> COMMAND and type
set | more (the | more bit is just incase theres loads of them)

Thanks guys. I think that the problem was the line I had in Autoexec.bat. I entered temp = c:\windows\temp. I now have temp=c:\windows\temp and also the tmp variable set and it works. [medal]

You can set the Temp path in Autoexec.bat but that isn't the proper way to do it in Win98. Win98 doesn't need your Autoexec.bat to run. I suggest searching the registry for Temp (use match case option) and see what comes up...

I agree that that ought to be the case. However, the temporary folder setting does not seem to be in the Registry and Windows 98 certainly responds to the system variable set in Autoexec.bat. Just one of those wrinkles of an imperfect system? ::)
