I have accidentally set a background colour to the display properties ("appearance" tab). It means that the description of each of the programmes on my desktop has a colour around it which I don't like. I have been into that area again and can't see how to reverse what I have done.Any ideas? Anyone know the path to that so I can reinstall from my recovery disk? thanks in anticipation Purdy

Don't need to re-install.

In Windows, press START | letter "U" | letter "M" |[ENTER], this will put you into MS-DOS MODE.

Then at the prompt type C: (if it isn't already at C:)
then type cdthen type cd windows
then type cd command
then type scanreg /restore (don't forget the space)
choose a date before the date that you changed the color, and push restore, then it will re-start and hopefully it will restore your old color setting.

Good luck [deejay]

When in display properties ("appearance" tab) Select "desktop" in the "Item" drop down list. Then to the right of that you will see a color box, click the arrow on the side and pick a color... Click "apply".

GCW That's what I did and am trying to undo!
I'll try Nate's suggestion (thanks Nate) Regards Purdy

Nate Excellent Thank you worked perfectly. Very handy. I have a programme called regedit that backs up the registry, I suppose that back up would've done the job too? Anyway that trick you showed me will come in handy thanks Cheers from Australia! Purdy

nate,

doesnt scanreg work from just the c prompt, or at least, c\windows as well?

:-Q x->

oh yes it does,

just tried it, and you can run scanreg /restore at the c:\ prompt instead of having to go to C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND
