Reverse DNS problem

Hello,
Have a co-located server on which we are running BIND to handle DNS.

I am having trouble getting reverse DNS to work. All forward records work for our domain names and I have set up a 123.456.789.in-addr.arpa PTR record which I am sure is correct. But after about 72 hours still can't do a reverse lookup. I read somewhere ( that my "bandwidth provider" or I guess the hosting company who's data centre we use, need to set something up.

Is this correct or do I have to set something else up in BIND or a name server file and the data centre/hosting/bandwidth provider are not responsible.?

Thanks.

The question is, who's DNS servers is the reverse range delegated to? Yours or your hosting company? Just because you are authoratative for your domain name, it doesn't follow that you are also for the reverse IP range.

I think the IP addresses are controlled by our ISP and we probably just borrow them. They did eventually come through for us and did something at their end to make the reverse lookups work.

Good. They must have either set up the reverse DNS on their servers or delegated a range to your servers.

Hi Guys
I'm experienced a similar problem with my dns

I've realised that I don't have reverse lookup zones.everytime I do an nslookup I can never resolve a domain name.
Is there a step by step guide for configuring dns. I've tried the micro$oft way but it's not easy for a beginner to follow it.

I've tried configuring the reverse zone. and I get stuck where it says
''To identify the reverse lookup zone, type the netwrk id or name of the zone''
What IP address do I put in there.
My server IP address would for example be
236.235.234.108
should I enter the 1st 3 octect's.

Can I explain what I mean. I've registered a domain name ''mydomain@no-ip.com''
when i do an nslookup I get the following

> Server: cache2.ntli.net
Address: 194.168.8.100

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: Address: 10.10.10.10

I guess this means my dns is wrongly configured. Please assist.

Thanks

Are you talking about configuring DNS setting on a PC or setting up a DNS server?

"I've registered a domain name ''mydomain@no-ip.com''"

Domain names do not have an '@' in the middle.

"Non-authoritative answer:

Looks like you've set up a domain suffix under your advanced DNS settings in your TCP/IP properties so that host that is not fully qualified has 'no-ip.com' tagged onto the end.

Thanks IProute

I'm doing this on my W2k3 domain controller.

''Looks like you've set up a domain suffix under your advanced DNS settings in your TCP/IP properties so that host that is not fully qualified has 'no-ip.com' tagged onto the end''

This was setup using the dns forward zone wizard. hence the reason I asked for a step by step dummie guide to configuring dns and for ensuring that it's working. all I need to do is to be able to resolve domain names & IP addresses.

Once again thanks for your help

If you are referring to setting up a Windows DNS server then I can't help you.

I suggest that you start a new thread and explain your problem in full.

Thanks again IProute

It's not a stand alone DNS server, It's a domain controller, and I'm trying to resolve the dns issue.
Please let me know if I should start another thread.
is anyone out there that might be able to help?

Yes, please start a new thread if you haven't already with all the details on what you are trying to do, and what the problems are. Good luck.
