Hi everyone...

Our highest priority MX record points to our SBS (mail.ourdomain.com).

I have run a DNS Report at dnsstuff.com and one error is "ERROR: The IP of one or more of your mail server(s) have no reverse DNS (PTR) entries/…"

The actual answer from our mailserver is: “No PTR records exist for xx.xx.xx.xx. [Neg TTL=86400 seconds]”.

Reverse DNS is set up fine on our SBS internally, for both our internal LAN nic (Internal IP Range 10.44.3.xxx), and the additional nic for our router (Internal IP Range 10.44.4.xxx).

How do I set up reverse DNS so that our external hostname (mail.ourdomain.com) is returned when our external IP is queried?

I've tried forwarding traffic for TCP port 53 to our server, allowing port 53 traffic into the server, then creating a reverse lookup zone for our external IP address, but am still getting the "No PTR records exist" problem.

I have had a quick look around the Exchange 2003 server forum but want to make sure I do this ‘the SBS way’.. i.e there may be a wizard for this???

I have recently learned how to create an HHTPS certificate, giving the server a fully qualified domain name, but I haven’t applied it to this particular server at present. But I don’t think this is relevant regarding this reverse DNS lookup problem.

Any ideas?

Thanks

It's up to your ISP to do the rDNS entry for your public IP address, since they own that address.

OH.

Well I have full control over our domain's DNS settings through an admin panel page.

This is where I've created the highest priority MX record "office.ourdomain.com".

"office.ourdomain.com" is an A Record that points to our server's IP address.

Any ideas what I would need to add to this page. The only section that I'm not sure about is the "Service records" section which has the fields: Name, Priority, Weight, Port & Result.

I just asumed that our SBS server would need to return the DNS query considering that office.ourdomain.com points straight to it.

Thanks

oh wait. sorry. I just read your reply again. OK - I will contact our ISP.

Thanks!
