Although jimstarr's suggestion might be a valid one, it is regional specific, where in other countries, you migh get a different answer, depending on your SET DATE. The following might be generic:
var1 = date()
? ALLTRIM(STR(DAY(var1)))+"/"+ALLTRIM(STR(MONTH(var1)))
