Retrieve Files

Hi ,

We have a user here that deleted files 4 weeks ago.
We did a purge last friday so using salvage isn't a solution.

Tape backup goes only 2 weeks back .

is there a way or utillity to mayby retrieve the files after doing a purge?

He didn't delete 1 file he deleted 300 files..............

What you have here is a good learning opportunity. Without sending your drives to a Data Restoration company, you're not going to get any data back. And if it was 4 weeks ago, wow, good luck.

The only remote chance you might have of getting data back is this.. Maybe you didn't purge the whole volume, just certain directories. And the person that deleted files deleted entire directories. So these deleted files ended up in DELETED.SAV and didn't get purged. I know, it's a long shot...

But you can learn something about setting up your backup jobs.

-- Don't keep the same tape in the drive and just use it over and over again.
-- Setup a Backup Rotation that does full backups daily, weekly, and monthly. And keep 8 or 9 copies of the weekly ones, and keep the Monthly ones for at least a year. Then every year take one of the yearly ones and put it somewhere to keep it just in case.
-- Don't trust your users. Revoke any unnecessary rights.

I know i already did change te backup cyclus.
This is my third week working here and he deleted it 4 weeks ago
I already ordered extra tapes
for monthly backups and for extra week backups.

and we purged everything here it was 43 gb to purge

Doncha just luv 'em? I'll bet money he knew it was a problem when he did it, and kept his mouth shut so he wouldn't get 'blamed'.

My other favorite is "Oh, by the way, my antivirus hasn't run since Christmas. Is this a problem?"

And the ever popular "Should I open this attachment?"
