Restrict inbound SIP calls?

On smaller system installs we quite often get asked to limit inbound SIP calls to 1, but for calls to still overflow if the first person doesnt answer, whats the best way to achieve this? If an overflow is set and the first person is busy on a call then the 2nd call will overflow rather than gve engaged tone/voicemail.

I have tried setting the max calls to 1 on the SIP URI for the incoming line ID, however we get a message at network level saying the call was not accepted rather than engaged tone when one call is in progress.. When we first tried this method we did get enagaged tone, so not sure if something has impacted this?

Is there another way I don't know about?

if you restrict the SIP URI to 1 call then the system will refuse to take the call and the provider will take over the message (depends on provider what they play)
if you want to get the call on another users phone then you need to fwd on busy setup but with multiple channels of SIP (at least 2) so that you can actually get the call.

They only want one call to be able to get through on the main number. Subsequent calls should hear engaged tone. The first call should only overflow if unanswered by the first phone when free. Its getting calls after the 1st call to hit engaged tone that we are struggling with. Doesnt always seem to play engaged tone when 1 call in progress.

What's up with all the folks not wanting to answer calls these days =)

Since this will require some "unusual" programming (if even possible) you would need to specify exactly how the call flow is supposed to be.

You'd be amazed how many time we get such a request..

Call comes in, if reception is free then reception should ring, if unanswered call overflows to rest of phones. If reception is already on a call then caller should hear engaged tone. Simple, in theory.

If you route calls directly to the receptions phone extension and don't have call waiting on that?
Forward on NA to overflow.
You still get a new call to the reception if the first one overflows though.

Might work, though orginally they had two phones ringing initially before overflowing so depends if they insist on that. Maybe if the 2nd phone in the group is twinned with the reception phone instead of them being in a group together? Guessing then only one call would come in on the main number still and only overflow if unanswered (not busy) Will give it a try, thanks.

You would get the same result with a collective group, with VM off and Queuing off, add the overflow group but leave the overflow timer off, it will only overflow once the no answer time on the group expires, not when she's busy on a call as overflow would :)
